πΎ Brush More Often
When the temperature drops, your dog’s grooming needs don’t go into hibernation, in fact, they need more attention than ever. One of the simplest and most effective things you can do at home to support your dog’s health and comfort this winter is regular brushing.
But why is brushing so important during the colder months?
π¬️ Winter Coats = Extra Risk for Mats
As winter rolls in, many breeds grow thicker coats to insulate against the cold. While this natural protection is vital, it also increases the chance of mats and tangles, especially in long-haired or double-coated dogs like Golden Retrievers, Pomeranians, Maltese, and Spaniels.
Mats aren’t just messy, they’re dangerous.
They trap moisture, dirt, and even debris close to the skin, which can cause:
-
Cold sensitivity (mats hold dampness and chill against the skin)
-
Skin irritation or infection
-
Pain and pulling when your dog moves or lies down
π️ Why Regular Brushing Makes a Big Difference
By brushing your dog 2 to 3 times a week, you help:
-
Remove loose hair and tangles before they turn into mats
-
Distribute natural oils throughout the coat, keeping it shiny and healthy
-
Keep the coat clean without the need for frequent winter baths (which can dry out the skin)
Brushing also gives you the chance to do a quick check for any lumps, skin issues, or signs of discomfort that might otherwise go unnoticed under a thick coat.
❄️ But Don’t Skip the Groomer!
While home brushing is incredibly beneficial, professional grooms are still essential in winter. At Swellendam Doggy Parlour, we’re open all season and make sure your pup stays comfortable throughout their visit. We use warm water, gentle dryers, and always groom in a heated environment.
Your dog’s winter comfort starts at home, but we’re here to help keep them looking and feeling their best.
